Is it getting harder for your loved one to live on their own? Is their health or well-being on the decline? If yes, it might be hard to initiate the tough topic of senior living options. Here are some tips on how to make this discussion go as smoothly as possible.
- Family Meeting
Have a family meeting before starting the discussion with your loved one. This is important so that everyone in your family can voice their concerns without creating unnecessary stress for your loved one. Once you come to an agreement, you can move onto the next step.
- Start With Your Concerns
If you start the conversation by stating that you are concerned about XYZ instead of saying something with blame it will set the right tone for the remainder of the discussion. For example instead of “You never take your medicine” you could say “I’m concerned that you have not been taking all your medicine as the doctor prescribed.”
- Listen To Your Parents
Make sure they are a part of the final decision-making process. Listen to their thoughts and feelings and make sure you agree with their needs. Not all facilities are the same. Finding a group that has similar hobbies and interests is just as important as good medical staff.
- Open Dialogue is Key
It is a very tough and important decision to leave your home and move into an Assisted Living Facility. The topic may have to be discussed several times before deciding on a course of action.
