Moving to Memory Care can be overwhelming for everyone involved. That is why we put together a list of tips to make the transition easier.
Tips to make the transition to Memory Care easier:
-
Realistic Expectations. It will take time for them to adjust to their new surroundings. It might get hard before it gets better.
-
Decorations: Make it feel like home with photos, and their favorite knick-knacks.
-
Trust the Staff: They are trained in dementia care and are there to help you every step of the way. For more information on dementia, visit here.
-
Be Active: Discuss your loved ones hobbies, health conditions, and needs so the facility can make them as comfortable and happy as possible.
-
Stay Connected: Visit them regularly and set up a visitation schedule with additional family members to ease their transition.
-
Positivity: Focus on fun activities, socializing and the delicious nutritious meals as a way to reassure your loved one about the facility and that this is the best thing for them.
-
Technology: If you can’t visit due to COVID-19, reach out to the Activity Director to ask about setting up Zoom calls with your loved one so you can keep in contact with them.

Thank you for pointing out that as far as expectations go, it can take some getting used to when seniors make the transition into dementia care. I like how you said it could get even harder at first. We are finding it necessary to move my great-uncle into a dementia treatment facility. It is becoming increasingly more difficult for him to stay safe at home. Since we want what is best for him, we will begin to move him over with the expectation that it will be difficult at first.
