The transition into senior living is never easy for anyone involved. Check out these tips for easing the transition below.
Tips for transitioning to Senior Living:
- Find creative ways to personalize their room. Bring a few sentimental items, frame their awards, and hang family photos.
- Create a floorplan and flow that works for them and makes them comfortable.
- Add some small houseplants to brighten up space. Check out our blog on a fun monthly plant gift idea here.
- Discuss any of their food preferences and dietary needs with the community and sample some of the food together.
- Introduce yourself to the staff and ask questions. If you have any concerns about laundry, housekeeping, meals, bathing, medication, and more; the staff is there to help in any way we can.
- If they have a favorite singer you can set them up with an easy way to play their favorite song or watch their favorite show with a click of a button. This will help them feel more at home if they are feeling overwhelmed or uncomfortable in their new surroundings.
Socialization:
- Know the community procedures for guests. Plan a daily, weekly, or monthly time to visit or catch up. If you live far away, reach out to the Director of Activities to schedule virtual visits.
- Help them understand the rules and how the community operates. Show them specific spots of the building that you think they would enjoy or activities on the calendar that relate to their personal hobbies.
- Encourage them to sign up for activities and to socialize at their own pace. This will keep them active and help with their overall quality of life.
- Have their favorite caregiver or someone they trust to hang out with them in the community for the first few days until they feel comfortable navigating on their own.
