There are multiple ways to help prevent falls. Speak with your doctor if you feel likely to fall or if you have fallen before.

According to the CDC, one out of four adults over the age of 65 fall each year, totaling about 36 million falls. While that is a large number, there are many steps you can take to help prevent falls.

At Alba Court Residences, your safety is our priority. We offer daily exercise classes for all body types that increase balance and flexibility, as well as body awareness. Additionally, each residential room is equipped with grab bars in the shower and toilet areas for safety and convenience.

EXERCISE

While it makes sense that frequent exercise would help to keep you on your feet, you may be wondering the science behind that. Harvard Medical School’s Better Balance states that “tight, inflexible, or weak muscles together with poor posture and endurance impinge on balance and can lead to falls.” Even more interesting, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews’ 2019 analysis found that frequent fitness activity could reduce the amount of yearly falls in the United States by 23%, and the number of people who fall by 15%.

ROUTINE CHECK-UPS

Speak with your doctor about any side effects you may be experiencing from prescribed medications, especially if they are causing you to feel dizzy or sleepy. It is also important to have your eyesight tested annually so that your glasses and/or contacts can reflect any vision changes.

MENTAL STIMULATION

There are several mind-body exercises that promote staying mentally active. Harvard notes tai chi, yoga and dance are successful “fall-prevention strategies.” These exercises increase flexibility and balance while also encouraging you to be more aware of your body and the space around you. Crossword puzzles, cooking new recipes and memorizing simple information can also help to exercise your brain.

LOOK AROUND YOUR LIVING SPACE

It is important to re-assess your living space every few months as your needs change. For example, any regular medications and necessities should always be within reach. Handrails on the stairs, as well as grab bars in the shower and near the toilet, are also helpful.
